Review/Giveaway of “You Were Always in My Heart” by the Chapmans

What a wonderful book I have to share with you today: You Were Always in My Heart: A Shaoey & Dot Adoption Story by Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman.  Many of us have heard of the Chapmans and the fact that they have adopted 3 children!  This precious story tells of a baby girl in China who is taken to an orphanage where she is found by her adopted parents.  It’s told from the perspective of Dot the Ladybug.  The illustrations by Jim Chapman III are adorable and the rhyming story sweet–and it will, of course, make you cry!

I am so glad adoption is so common today.  If you have adopted, you’ll want this book to read to your children.  If you have a friend who’s adopted, please enter to win it for them!

Review of Alpha-Phonics: A Primer for Beginning Readers

I am happy to share a review today of a great reading curriculum:  Alpha-Phonics: A Primer for Beginning Readers by Samuel Blumenfeld.  (And read to the end of the post to see how you can win a copy yourself!)  The first thing I noticed about Alpha-Phonics was how simple it is–not a lot of pieces to lose or complicated instructions.  The main book comes comb-bound (I took it out and put it in a 3-ring binder to help it last longer).  There are 128 lessons, each about a page long.  In the back of the book, it gives the teacher/mom a simple instruction on how to teach each lesson.  So, each day when we got to a new lesson, I would turn to the back and quickly read my instructions before I had the child do his/her reading lesson.

Alpha-Phonics 004

Also, in the back you’ll be able to read the philosophy behind the type of phonics instruction that Alpha-Phonics uses.  They start out by teaching the short vowels, then the consonant blends (final blends first, then the initial blends).  Last they teach the long vowels in their great variety of spelling forms.  There is also some pre-reading instruction (teaching the letters and their sounds), so this curriculum will work for anyone starting out to teach their child to read!

I used it for the past few weeks with three of my kids.  My 4-year-old already knows the letter names and sounds and was ready to start with lesson 1.  We got through Lesson 10.  She did well and I think we’ll keep using Alpha-Phonics all the way to the last lesson to see how she does.  I expect she will be reading quite well by the time we get to the end of the book.  She also used the “Little Companion Reader” Short Vowel A book and had fun reading a real “book!”

Alpha-Phonics 005

Alpha-Phonics 006

The second child I tried Alpha-Phonics with is my 4th child, my 8-year-old.  She is my struggling reader.  I am debating whether to continue through this curriculum with her or to try a multi-sensory approach (one that is hands-on and uses colors, etc.)  The other 2 curricula I have used with her (TATRAS and Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons) are similar to Alpha-Phonics in their approach.  Those worked great for teaching my first 3 kids to read, as well as the 2 kids after her!  She isn’t catching very quickly with this approach, so I might try something different with her.

The third child I used Alpha-Phonics with was my 6-year-old son, who has just “taken off” with reading and will pick up his own books to read now.  :)  I started on Lesson 20 with him because he can still use some focus on recognizing phonograms (ch, dge, ough).  I’ll continue with him through the rest of the Alpha-Phonics book.   He had fun reading the Little Companion Reader “The Chums” which uses short vowels with digraphs.

Another thing he really enjoyed (and it kind of surprised me) was the Companion Workbook.  It contains about 40 worksheets, the answers, and ways to work on syllabication (how to divide words into syllables).

Alpha-Phonics ICC Chapter Presentation 002

Do you want to know one of the best things about the Alpha-Phonics curriculum–well, besides the fact that it’s so simple to teach and it will teach your kids how to read!?  It’s so affordable!  The cost is only $34.95, and that includes a CD-Rom of all the lessons–if you’d prefer to use the computer monitor to show the kids the words to read each day.  (The CD-Rom also includes the parent/teacher instructions and pronounces things).  The Little Companion Readers (set of 10) are $24.95 and the Companion Workbook is $19.95.

Check out the Alpha-Phonics website to see samples and videos.

And now a giveaway of the Alpha-Phonics Primer for Beginning Readers with the CD-Rom!  Enter through the Rafflecopter app (click through to my website if you don’t see it.)

Review/Giveaway of “Hunt for the Devil’s Dragon”, Imagination Station Book #11

Wow- we’re up to eleven Imagination Station books now!  Today’s review is of Hunt for the Devil’s Dragon by Marianne Hering and Wayne Thomas Batson, published by Focus on the Family.

The basic storyline is that a dragon is supposedly attacking the people of a town in Libya during the Middle Ages.  Cousins Patrick and Beth travel back in time in Odyssey’s Imagination Station and meet 2 kids from the town.  They go with them and work with others to kill the threat while fighting to keep themselves alive.  It is based on a story of Sir George and the Dragon, where Sir George (Georgius in this story) is a Roman soldier, not the more commonly thought-of English knight.

My 9-year-old daughter read it to herself and enjoyed it.  She doesn’t like scary stories, and this wasn’t too much for her.  It’s a chapter book, but on a easier reading level than most books. I then read it aloud to the next 3 kids (ages 8, 6, and 4).  They enjoyed hearing it as well!

I will say that I preferred some of the earlier Imagination Station books more–the ones that retold Bible stories or events from famous Christian missionaries or heroes of the faith.  I suppose you could think of Georgius as a hero of the faith, but he’s a legend, possibly not even a real historical person, so it’s not the same.  However, Hunt for the Devil’s Dragon is another great book to add to your Imagination Station collection!

See here for my other Imagination Station reviews:

Review/Giveaway of Hermie’s “I Will Tell the Truth” DVD

This week I have a review and giveaway (see below!) of a wonderful DVD from Max Lucado:  Hermie & Friends “I Will Tell the Truth” and “Be Careful What I Say”.
Recently I was at a homeschool moms meeting and the topic of lying came up–specifically that a couple of the moms were having trouble with their kids lying.  Have you been there?  Oh,  it can be so frustrating and even scary.  You get to the point where you can’t trust them.  Not a good place to be with your kids!
I would recommend this DVD in helping to teach your kids why it’s wrong to lie and why it’s so important to tell the truth!  The second episode talks more specifically about learning to be kind in our speech (and apologizing when we’re not).  Anyone who still enjoys animated movies will enjoy these 2 episodes.  Even my 11- and 12-year-old sons watched it a couple of times!
We had checked this DVD out of the library a year or so back and LOVED it!  I’m so glad to own it now.  We love all the Hermie series of DVDs because they are very well made, and the stories are by Max Lucado–a masterful storyteller!  He even appears on the DVD talking to Hermie about the lessons learned.  It’s amazing the voice talent that they have: Tim Conway is Hermie, Don Knotts is Wormie, and Vickie Lawrence is Flo the Fly!
Story descriptions:  Telling the truth or saying you are sorry is not always easy, but it’s the right thing to do. These two beloved Hermie & Friends stories illustrate how God loves for us to choose our words carefully.

In Flo, the Lyin’ Fly the garden bugs grow tired of Flo’s flood of fibs. Like the little boy who cried wolf, Flo thinks it’s fun to tell stories that aren’t true. When Hermie and his friends discover they can’t trust Flo, they refuse to believe her when there’s real trouble. With all her lies catching up to her, Flo discovers the importance of always telling the truth, no matter what!

In The Flo Show Creates a Buzz, things don’t go as expected when Flo gets her very own TV talk show. She has to think about what to say, what to wear, and who to invite as guests. What she isn’t thinking about are other people’s feelings. After insulting every guest on her show and embellishing the truth to boost ratings, Flo realizes she owes them an apology. Flo learns that words are very powerful and saying you are sorry can make all the difference!

My kids also enjoyed the bonus features this DVD, including “behind the scenes” where they saw the actors doing the voices of the characters as well as learning how to draw Hermie.

You can read more about the Hermie DVDs at the Thomas Nelson site.
