Day 2: Homeschooling Middle School With Well Planned Day Student Planner (& GIVEAWAY!)

Homeschooling Middle School final

Well Planned Day Student Planner Giveaway

Welcome to Day 2 of Homeschooling Middle School.  (There is a giveaway of the Well-Planned Day Student Planner–so read on!)  One thing that I’ve done that has been extremely successful is to begin transitioning my kids around 4th or 5th grade to be taking more responsibility in their own schooling.  I want them to begin making decisions about what they are learning (which foreign language?) and even to choose their own curriculum if we have a choice between 2 or 3 good ones.  I have found they are often more motivated when they feel they have had a “buy-in” to what they have to do for school.

Another great thing that we’ve done to build their independence in homeschooling is to use some type of student planner.  Sometimes I use a simple Word document chart that lists each subject they are to do each day.  Or we have also used these wonderful Student Planners from Well-Planned Day!  On Monday of each week my 3 oldest kids write down the page numbers, chapters, books to read, etc. that they are planning to do for the subject on each day of that week.  Then they check off each box when they complete it.

This method serves 3 purposes:

1.  They know what they are supposed to do

2.  I know what they are supposed to do and what I need to check

3.  It’s a record of all they have learned for the year

I know that my kids are learning some valuable skills by not having Mom make all the decisions about lesson planning for them.  They can choose to go faster through a subject if they want.  They can drop a subject for a while (with my approval) to pursue another subject.  For example, my oldest has been studying Philosophy for the past month and it includes a Bible Study that he has been doing instead of the one he was doing before.  Also, my second son is about to start studying a Home Business course.  This might take the place of some of his math for a while.

So, in conclusion, I recommend transitioning your Middle Schoolers to more independence.  Help them make their own decisions and use a planner so they can be responsible for their work!

The Well-Planned Day Student Planner comes in two styles: Floral and Tech.

Here are some of the features:

  • Help your children learn to work independently!
  • Designed specifically for students in elementary and middle school years.
  • Two design options and features full color pages

  • Over 175 pages
  • 9″x6″ size planner

Day 1: Homeschooling Middle School with Grapevine Bible Studies (GIVEAWAY!)

>Homeschooling Middle School final

Depending on how you look at it I am now homeschooling either one or two kids in middle school:  6th and 7th grade.  I have just started this journey, but have learned a few things I’d like to share this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Tuesday:  Grapevine Studies Bible Studies for middle schoolers–With a GIVEAWAY of a $25 Shopping Spree!

Wednesday:  Teaching middle schoolers independence by using planners such as those from Well-Planned Day– With a GIVEAWAY of a Student Planner!

Thursday:  Looking ahead to High School–planning now while they are in middle school — With a Special Offer of a Free Webinar!

For Day 1 of our Middle School series I’d love to share about the Bible Study my boys have been using this year from Grapevine Studies.

Specifically it’s the Level 4 New Testament Survey.  I wanted my boys to get an overview of the whole New Testament as they studied the Bible this year.  Each week they read a portion of Scripture, take notes on it by drawing Stick Figures and other graphics to help them illustrate what happened, answer review questions, and study deeper by using specific resources such as a Bible Dictionary (Vine’s), a Concordance, and a Topical Bible (Nave’s).  It’s been different from other Bible studies they have done in that they are doing a lot of the study on their own.  It’s more open-ended rather than being completely laid out for them.  I really like this aspect since it is stretching them more.  And I know they really enjoy the stick-figuring aspect!

Here are a copy of pages the boys did:  (Sorry they’re side-ways!)

Make sure you include studying the Bible as part of your Middle Schooler’s learning!

Be sure go to the Grapevine Studies website to look at their free samples.  They have Bible studies for all ages for use in all different settings!  You’ll find what you’re looking for!  (My elementary kids absolutely love the traceable Bible studies–we’re doing an Old Testament survey with them this year.)

Grapevine Studies has offered to giveaway a $25 Shopping Spree!  Please enter through the Rafflecopter app below!  Winner will be chosen on April 15 and will have 24 hours to respond to my email.

Giveaway of 3 Zondervan Books for Kids & 3 for Teens!

I have a wonderful giveaway today.  There are two sets of books–one for kids and one for teens.  Enter one giveaway or both!  These would be wonderful to give to your kids for Easter, or for any other occasion!

The Kids Set (for preschool-age 7) has

The Legend of the Easter Egg by Lori Walburg (illustrated by Richard Cowdrey) The Berenstain Bears Keep the Faith, by Mike Berenstain 101 Bible Stories from Creation to Revelation (illustrated by Dan Andreasen)   Zondervan books 007 In The Legend of the Easter Egg, we follow the story of a little boy whose sister has become very sick.  He goes to stay with friends while she gets better.  While there he learns about why Easter eggs remind us of Easter.  A chick breaks out of its egg, just like Christ broke out of the tomb. The boy understands about Jesus and His sacrifice and gives his life to Christ.    On Easter morning he runs to see his sister who is now better to tell her of his new faith in Jesus.  It’s a pretty, hardback book. Zondervan books 008   Book reviews- Daniel, Noah, Berenstain Bears Keep Faith, Veggie 018 In The Berenstain Bears Keep the Faith Brother and Sister Bear find out that their science-loving friend Ferdy Factual doesn’t believe God created the world.  It’s the first time Brother and Sister encounter someone who thinks that you can’t believe in or trust God if you are a scientist. Brother and Sister love science, too.  They love to learn about dinosaurs and fossils, to look at the stars with a telescope, and to look through a microscope at germs.  But when they are looking at the moon through a telescope with Ferdy, Sister mentions that God did a good job.  Ferdy tell them that not only does he not believe that God created everything, he doesn’t even believe in God.  He only believes in things he can see and test and prove. The bears talked to their parents about it.  Mama tells them that they have to have faith.  Now that’s a hard concept for young kids to understand!  So, the next day they go to visit Preacher Brown to see if he can expain it better.  They learn that faith comes from reading the Bible, feeling God’s love for us, and in seeing the beauty of God’s creation.  Preacher Brown also tells them that Daniel in the Bible had faith that God would save him from the lions.  Faith in God is trusting in his love.  Brother and Sister Bear decide at the end of the story that faith in God is important to them. I love how this book shows that you can be a “scientist” and have faith in God at the same time. Book reviews- Daniel, Noah, Berenstain Bears Keep Faith, Veggie 020 Book reviews- Daniel, Noah, Berenstain Bears Keep Faith, Veggie 019     Zondervan books 013 101 Bible Stories From Creation to Revelation is a Bible story book.  There are 3 things I really like about this book that make it unique from other Bible story books:  half of the stories are from the New Testament, the illustrations are more realistic (not cartoonish), and it has a higher reading level.  It is perfect for reading to children or for independent older readers to read to themselves.  Each facing page has one page of the story and one page of illustration.  Hardback book with 217 pages. Review/Giveaway “I Will Trust God” Hermie and Friends DVD by Max Lucado

I’m happy to review a wonderful DVD for ages 4-7 today: “I Will Trust God” which is part of Max Lucado’s Hermie and Friends series.  It’s a 2 in 1 deal where you get two episodes in one DVD!

We have always loved the Hermie and Friends DVDs with the great voice talent of Tim Conway, Don Knotts, Vicki Lawrence, and Frank Peretti.  Max Lucado also stars as himself and shares a wonderful truth from God’s Word for each episode.

In the first episode Hermie and the High Seas, Hermie receives a message from God.  God wants him to build a boat.  Hermie isn’t told why, and he tries to get the other bugs in the garden to help him.  But they won’t help him because there is a drought and they can’t figure out why he would be doing such a thing.  Everyone has a very creative excuse.  But when it starts raining and then flooding, Hermie saves everyone in his boat!  Everyone learns to trust God even when He doesn’t make sense.

In the second episode Who is in Charge Anyway? we see many vignettes about the special ways God has made each of the bugs.  They all have challenges, but they also all have something special that is unique to them.  It’s hard for Freddie the Flea to see what’s special about him, but he does learn to trust God that He’ll one day see his talents and know the special plan God has for him.

And there’s more–the bonus features!   Behind the scenes, Fun Garden Game, Sing-along songs featured in the stories, 90 minutes total for episodes plus bonus features.

And now you have a chance to win this DVD! Enter through the Rafflecopter app below.  The winner will be chosen on Wednesday March 26, and will have 24 hours to respond to my email.  18+, U.S. only.

Review/Giveaway Precious Moments Little Book of Bedtime {Link Party}

Today I have a review and Giveaway! of the Precious Moments Little Book of Bedtime published by Tommy Nelson Publishers. I really like this little padded board book for ages 1-4, and so does my sweetie pie.  It’s the perfect book to read before bed.

Kinderbach, Precious Moments, Veggie Tales 027

Kinderbach, Precious Moments, Veggie Tales 033

Review/Giveaway “One God, One Plan, One Life: A 365 Devotional” by Max Lucado

One God, One Plan, One Life Devotional

I have a review and giveaway today of a devotional by Max Lucado called One God, One Plan, One Life. It’s specifically written for teens (adapted by James Lund), and I would even say it’s for teen boys. Some of the topics are deep, so I definitely wouldn’t recommend the book for children. The devotional book touches on issues such as purity, drug and alcohol abuse, and bullying.

I really like the way the daily devotionals read. They’re short enough to be accessible to this age group–it’s all on one page. It starts with a verse of Scripture which is written out. Then there are a few paragraphs (often with more Scripture mixed in). Finally, there is “One More Thought.” This is a call to action/application, an explanation, or something to further think about. Here’s one I liked from May 16:

“What’s really bugging you right now? Take a moment to look past the problem. Can you see God’s hand in it? Can you see how he might use your struggle as part of his plan? Think about what’s excellent in your life? Now look again–hope is on your horizon.”

The devotional book itself is hardback, 389 pages, with its own orange ribbon bookmark. The material has been adapted for teens and comes from 6 other devotional books written by Max Lucado. At the back you’ll find Notes (a list of footnotes) and 2 different Bible reading plans (30 Days with Jesus and 90 Days Through the Bible.)  You can see a Flipbook here.

Now that I’m through reviewing it, One God, One Plan, One Life is now with my teen son so he can use it each day.

I’m happy to have a copy of this book published by Thomas Nelson to give away! Please enter on the Rafflecopter app below. The winner will be chosen January 19 and will have 24 hours to respond to my email. 18+, U.S. only please.

Review/Giveaway Friends and Heroes DVD and Homeschool Curriculum plus {linky}

HS_Unit_1_Cover_web_cropped - Copy

Friends and Heroes is a new company I have recently been introduced to. We received a DVD and a CD-Rom Homeschool curriculum to review. Specifically, it’s the Friends and Heroes Unit Study #1.  Normally, this set costs $29.99, but there is a sale in January for 20% off!

The DVD contains a 25-minute story called “Long Journey”. It tells the story of a family living in Alexandria, Egypt as Christians soon after Jesus returned to Heaven. There are 2 young girls who are refugees from Israel and were sent by their father to stay with Macky and his family in Egypt. However, the Romans who are the rulers don’t want them there. They are continually being chased and trying to escape. Macky and his dad talk about two events from the Bible: Daniel and the lions den to remind them to have courage, and Jesus helping the disciples catch a lot of fish to remind them to have faith in the Lord’s power.

My younger kids watched the DVD twice and enjoyed it. They learned about loyalty, courage, and standing up for what is right. The animation graphics are pretty good. You can watch a preview of this story here:

I was impressed with the Homeschool Curriculum. It’s on CD-Rom, so you can print out the pages you choose–student and teacher pages. There are 3 chapters, and each contains a variety of activities that could easily take a few weeks to complete if you did them all: History/Geography, Creative Writing, Bible Study, Science, Craft, and One-on-One Time! You can also adapt or choose activities for different children according to their academic level.  Here are a few of the activities my kids (ages 5, 7, 8, and 10) did.

From House to Home {Link Party}: Review/Giveaway of My Story: Joseph and My Story: David by Fiona Boon

Joseph and David Sticker Books 001

My Story: Joseph

My Story: David

I have 2 new Tommy Mommy books to review (and Give Away!) today.  My preschoolers really loved these.  They’re called My Story: Joseph and My Story: David by Fiona Boon.  The stories are about the Biblical men Joseph and David.  They’re paperback and tell each story from the perspective of the main character.  The illustrations are engaging cartoon characters and the story style is a bit childish and slangish.  But the part they loved the most was putting the stickers in the book after we read the story!  Another great thing about these books?  They’re only $4.99 (or less) each!

Each book goes through the basic life story of the character.  For David, we meet his father, Samuel who anoints him as King with oil, King Saul, and Goliath.  We learn about David taking care of his father’s sheep and killing lions and bears.  Then he goes to the war camp and hears Goliath’s taunts.  David decides to fight Goliath with his slingshot.  The book does mention that David cuts off Goliath’s head (I usually leave that part out when reading it to my preschoolers.)

In the Joseph story we learn about the coat that Joseph’s father gives him and that it makes his brothers jealous.  They throw Joseph into a pit and then sell him to be a slave.  Joseph is taken to Egypt and is eventually thrown in prison.  He interprets dreams there and is then able to interpret Pharoah’s dream about the famine coming to Egypt.  Pharoah puts Joseph in charge, and Joseph saves everyone by carefully storing food during the years of plenty.  Finally, Joseph’s brothers come to buy food, the families are reunited, and they all move to Egypt to live.

My Story: Joseph and My Story: David

*ages 1-4  (I would say ages 3-7 because of the stickers and it’s not a board book.)

*Engaging art with stories told in first-person perspective

*Each book includes 45 story-themed stickers that kids can use throughout the book to enhance application and learning

Review (and HUGE giveaway) of “Simply Put: A Study of Economics” Textbook

Simply Put

Well, I have spent the last month reading through an economics text. :) I smile, because it’s not anything I would ever do “just for fun.”

But I was very intrigued by this book by Catherine Jaime called Simply Put: A Study of Economics, and am pleased to review it today.  There is an awesome Giveaway, so keep reading through to the end!

Catherine has 12 children of her own that she has homeschooled.  Ten are graduated; she has 2 more in their high school years.  After teaching economics for years, she decided to write her own book on the subject.

Here is what she says, “Economics gets a bad rap among so many, and yet as a long-time student and teacher of economics, I often wonder why. Maybe it’s because most economic textbooks are so boring. In fact, I started this book after I looked unsuccessfully for an economics textbook that I could recommend for high schoolers. I found few options that didn’t put me to sleep – and I like the topic! Thus began my desire to write an alternative economics textbook. Here it is, after more than two years, my contribution to teaching economics. I hope you and your students will soon find it as interesting a topic as I do.”

Simply Put: A Study of Economics is meant to used as the spine for a high school Economics credit (one semester).  You’ll find almost everything you need just in this text and the accompanying teacher guide.  Catherine says that it’s all you need, but I would recommend adding in some of the resources she suggests watching and reading: different websites, DVDs, and books to help reinforce the subject.

What I Love:

  • There are 36 lessons, and each lesson is 1-2 pages long and not difficult to read
  • If you want to use them, there are review questions at the end of each lesson
  • There is a mid-term and final exam in the book (and answers to those in the teacher’s guide)
  • The teacher’s guide also includes two activities which would be great for the students to do.
  • I learned A TON reading this book.  It’s written on a level that is accessible to most of us; it will be understood by most high schoolers.
  • It’s written from a conservative viewpoint, and helps us understand why imports are important for the economy and unions are hurtful to it–plus so much more!
  • Helpful footnotes give definitions and further resources to study
  • She includes great quotes from economists such as Adam Smith and Frederick Bastiat.
  • She explains how what we hear in the media usually isn’t the full story.
  • Included is the Pilgrim’s story of when they tried socialism and how it didn’t work
  • A glossary is included with the most important terms to learn.

What I Didn’t Like So Much:

  • I would love to have some kind of project or activity to do for each lesson, so we can really internalize what we learned
  • The charts and graphs are not the highest quality
  • I feel that some subjects are just barely touched on and don’t go enough in depth on (such as mercantilism and laissez faire).

Activity included in the Teacher Book:

The game pictured below is called “Free Trade in Action” and can be played with 8-30 students.  It’s helps the kids understand what Free Trade does for us.

Economics 001

Great Quotes:

“It appears safe to say that unions served a valuable purpose when they first came along and protected workers from long hours and dangerous workplaces.  But they have gone far beyond that place today.”

“Something ‘free’ from the government never really is; anything given away as ‘entitlement’ has to first be taken from someone else.”

“Sometimes we seem to forget that the Declaration of Independence talks about the right to ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness‘ — not ‘life, liberty, and happiness.’  Government’s role should never be to make us happy.”

 My Take-Away:

I plan to use Simply Put: A Study of Economics for my kids’ high school economics course.  It would be fun to do in a co-op or with a group, but we can use it for independent study as well.

Where to Buy:

Find the paperback book at Amazon.  You can take a “Peek Inside” there, too!

Review/Giveaway of Itsy Bitsy Christmas by Max Lucado

Books, recipes, science 011

I have another Christmas book to review (and giveaway) – Itsy Bitsy Christmas by Max Lucado, illustrated by Bruno Merz.

It tells the story of 2 mice in Bethlehem who hear from a donkey that a King is coming to their town.  They look everywhere trying to find him.  None of the other animals believe them.  Mama horse tells them, “I’m afraid this place is too common for a King.  No King would care about us.”

That’s the message of this book–that a King did care for us, that we aren’t too common for the King of Kings to come to us care about us!

Finally, the mice find Him in the stable, a newborn King born in Bethlehem.

You’ll enjoy this beautiful hardback book with your children this Christmas.
