Four Reasons We Study Spanish

Why do we study Spanish? It’s a great question because every subject we spend time with means less time to spend learning something else.

Here are Four Reasons We Study Spanish:

  • Spanish is spoken by a huge number of people in the world. Even in my own town in Illinois, we are surrounded by Spanish-speakers. We want to be able to converse with them because many of them don’t know English. Learning it now gives a great head-start for my kids to get more proficient as they get older.
  • It’s a fairly easy language to learn. Compared to some languages like Chinese, Arabic, or Russian, Spanish is easy because it uses our same alphabet and doesn’t have many “exceptions to the rule.”
  • We can use Spanish to be a witness for Christ. We want all people to know our Savior. Knowing a foreign language is a great way to connect with a whole new group of people. Since Spanish-speaking countries are near us, they are a great option for going to on mission trips.
  • I’ve found an awesome Spanish curriculum that my kids love:  Flip Flop Spanish

  2. Great thoughts! Our church has bilingual Spanish/English services. It’s a great way to see how Christ spans language. We just started using Rosetta Stone this year with my oldest. We really need to include the younger ones as well. What age do your kids start Spanish lessons?

    1. That’s wonderful about the bilingual services! With this curriculum the youngest was 3. 🙂

  3. When I was in college, we learned that a child’s brain would actually develop new neuron pathways when they were learning a new language – up to about the age of ten. That means that learning a foreign language before 10 or 11 actually gives them a greater ability to learn a language – any language- later in life! It is kind of a “use it or lose it” type of thing. Our brains aren’t as “elastic”, which is why adults find it so much harder to learn new things (especially languages) than kids do. So I think it is great that you are teaching them!

    1. Yes, isn’t that amazing? The same goes for music, by the way. 🙂
