Tapestry of Grace “Roaring Twenties” Celebration
I’ve mentioned how happy I am with our new homeschool co-op this year! We are using the curriculum Tapestry of Grace and studying 20th Century literature, history, and geography with our friends. (I also teach music appreciation/music history).
Twice this year we will have a Unit Celebration where we all get together in the evening to celebrate an era of history we’ve studied. Our first one was a “Roaring Twenties” party! The kids had so much fun dressing up in 1920’s garb.
When we first got there we were directed as families to the photography area. We were blessed to have my husband’s parents join us.

Next we went into the sanctuary for a showing of the first ever “talking picture” The Jazz Singer. We had a little speech from a couple of our co-op’s leaders and a presentation from some of the kids.
We were then directed into a room where lots of projects from the year were displayed. And then finally into the room where were to eat!
On the menu were some popular foods from the 1920s: turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, and even a fun Flapper cake!
I planned the musical portion of the evening (during dinner). We had several students play or sing popular songs from the 1920s: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Side By Side,” “Second-Hand Rose,” “In the Mood.” I even sang a couple of Gershwin tunes!
When I had my back turned, she got into the cake frosting.
I made my Twenties dress. (Here’s a tutorial.)
After dinner came the costume contest and dancing–The Charleston!
Everything about the evening was a smash–the food, the entertainment, and especially the costumes!
What a fun way to wrap up a unit study. That is such an interesting time period.
Yes, the time period made it so easy to have a fun celebration!

What a lot of fun! We have another family that we get together with once per month and do a project based on what we are studying. I love the idea of a theme party! I’ll be tucking this in the back of my hat for future use. Awesome dresses, too!
What a great idea to get together once a month for projects!

Fun! We’re studying the Roaring Twenties right now, and those are great ideas!
Definitely! Try to do a celebration with a few other families!
