Memory Verses

In order to help my children gain an overview of the whole Bible, we are memorizing a verse from each book, in order.  We’re about to start the verse for Ezra next week.  Some of the verses are shortened and all are from NIV.  If we memorize one every two weeks or so, we should finish the Old Testament by the end of the year and start the New Testament in 2008.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1

Honor your father and your mother.
Exodus 20:12

Love your neighbor as yourself.
Leviticus 19:18

The Lord bless you and keep you.
Numbers 6:24

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
Deuteronomy 6:5

Be strong and courageous. . . for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9

I will sing to the Lord, I will sing.
Judges 5:3

Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer.
Ruth 4:14

But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.
I Samuel 12:24

As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless.
II Samuel 22:31

O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below–you keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way.
I Kings 8:23

Great is the Lord’s anger that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book.
II Kings 22:13

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
I Chronicles 29:11

The Lord is with you when you are with him.  If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him , he will forsake you.
II Chronicles 15:2

With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord:
“He is good; his love to Israel endures forever.”
Ezra 3:11

  1. What a great list of verses! How long does it take them to memorize a verse?

What a great idea! We have been memorizing Bible verses for each letter of the alphabet. They are on a card we have from Samaritan's Purse.

A – All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 3:23

B- Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world John 1:29b

    etc….

  3. If we really worked on each new verse every day, they would probably have it memorized in one week. But it usually takes about two weeks. And we continue to review them often.
