Review and Giveaway of “Lily Robbins M.D.” and “The Body Book” by Nancy Rue
Today I’d like to share a review of the books Lily Robbins, M.D. and The Body Book by Nancy Rue, published by Thomas Nelson. These are the second books in the Lily series and are a fiction/non-fiction pair especially for tween girls (ages 7-11).
Lily Robbins, M.D. is an engaging story with Lily, a charming, clever, and not-so-perfect main character the girls will relate to. In this book she witnesses a car accident and helps a little boy at the scene. That experience encourages her to learn more about medicine and how the body works in her quest to become a medical worker. She takes a class for girls to learn about their bodies, reads lots of books about first aid, and enlists the Girlz (her friends) to learn as well.
The Body Book is a non-fiction book which encourages girls to embrace the unique and special body God gave them and to trust Him during this time of transition. It explains about the body changes that will occur during puberty and the fun Q&A format provides helpful, practical tips for all the body changes tweens are experiencing. Some of the topics covered are menstruation, body changes, eating healthy, eating disorders, and exercise.
Things I liked:
* All of these issues are dealt with in a Christian manner. They encourage the girls to listen to their moms, to trust them, and be respectful.
* The unborn baby is treated as a real baby right from conception, of course!
* There are a lot of Scripture and prayers included. The girls are encouraged to journal about their feelings and talk to God about it.
* I learned some things I didn’t know that will help me as I help my daughters enter this change in their life.
Things I didn’t like:
* A major part of the fiction book’s plot takes place at school. I don’t like the focus on it and the way the kids relate to each other there. Getting away from all that “junk” is one of the reasons we decided to homeschool. I wish the books didn’t emphasize the school culture so much.
* In a short sentence in The Body Book explaining how the egg is fertilized, the book talks about “the guy”, not “your husband.” This is a HUGE mistake, in my opinion and very contrasting to the very godly way of dealing with the other issues.
* There was no discussion of the dangers of Toxic Shock Syndrome related to tampon use (high absorbency or leaving in too long). In fact the book said emphatically that you can’t get sick from their use. Another HUGE mistake. See here for more info on TSS.

I started reading the fiction books to my girls (ages 7 and 9) and decided that because Lily is an older girl (in sixth grade) it would be best for my girls to be older before they read them. I’ll wait until they are 10 or 11. They are very excited to read them already, though. Lily truly is a character they want to relate to– I’m sure your girls would love her, too!
