Strawberries!
Yesterday we went to pick strawberries at a u-pick farm. It’s something that we have been wanting to do for years, so I’m glad it finally worked out. We picked 8 pounds, and they were $1.75 a pound–so much cheaper than the store! I wish we could do the same for raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. We have raspberries, cherries and blueberries growing in our backyard, but I think the birds have gotten them all.
When we got home, I headed over to Target to buy a canning kit. After doing some research, I decided to try out the hot water bath canner first, rather than a pressure canner. That means I can only can fruits and tomatoes this year, but that’s a good start. (Vegetables and meats need a temperature higher than 212 degrees, boiling point, to kill all that needs to be killed.)
Yesterday I made 7 half-pints of strawberry jam. We tried some for breakfast this morning and it was good, so I made 6 more today. That won’t last our family very long, but it was still fun to try something new.
Last night we also had some yummy strawberry shortcakes!
