Homeschool Enrichment Ideas for the Christmas Season

Things always change around here during December. The Christmas tree is up, and we seem to want to do different things in our homeschool as well. I’m happy to share with you today several resources that we have used to make December more fun and meaningful.

Grapevine Studies Birth of Jesus Bible Study:

Grapevine Studies produces really neat Bible Studies that my kids love because they use stick figures to help illustrate the story being learned. In December is great to do the Birth of Jesus study in 7 lessons.

The lessons take about 15 minutes each.  The seven lessons cover Mary, Joseph, the Birth of Jesus, The Shepherds, The Temple, The Wise Men, and Herod.

SQUILT Christmas Carols music appreciation curriculum:

As a music teacher I’m pretty critical of music curricula. SQUILT is one that I highly recommend! There are 2 volumes of Christmas Carols. Each is about 24 pages long and teaches about 5 Christmas carols. You’ll find everything you need included–what to teach, links for more info (including special sites like how to draw something), and links to the music to listen to (on YouTube)!  It’s so easy.

Maestro Classics Nutcracker CD:

Here’s one that’s so fun for learning about the classic story The Nutcracker. Maestro Classics has the music recorded with a narrator telling the story as you listen to it. We enjoyed this one in the car.

 

Jotham’s Journey: A Storybook for Advent (and others in the series):

We were first introduced to these great books by Arnold Ytreeide years ago. You read a chapter every day for the advent season. (There is one for Easter, too.) We are reading the brand new one this year! I love getting the family together every evening with Daddy reading it to us. 🙂

Gloria: A Christmas Hymn Study:

Another high-quality product from Not Consumed, Gloria: A Christmas Hymn Study is a 92-page collection that shares the story behind each hymn, related scripture and history, copywork, coloring pages, word searches, Tin Whistle sheet music, and more!

Truth in the Tinsel:

With Truth in the Tinsel you get 24 days of Scripture reading, ornament crafts, talking points and extension activities. Plus fun printables and templates! This looks great!

The Christmas Carol Wars:

And, finally, here is a script for a Christmas play called The Christmas Carol Wars. Do it with your family, Sunday school class, co-op, neighbors, etc. And it’s Free!
