Years ago at a homeschool conference, I first heard about alternative ways to get college credits and even a whole college degree. It was fascinating to consider these options, and now, I’m ready to start putting that knowledge into practice with my teens. Last year my oldest son took an AP exam for the first time, and this year my oldest daughter will take a CLEP exam. High scores on both of these exams taken in high school (without taking a college class) will earn them college credit!
But, how will they be ready to earn a high score? By studying, of course. There are various ways to accomplish that, but I’m excited to share today a new way that I just discovered in the last couple of months! I’m happy to review the Study.com CLEP test prep product. Specifically, we looked at the Biology CLEP test prep since that’s the exam my daughter will take in June. I’m so glad to have found a way to help her prepare for CLEP test.
How to Use Study.com CLEP Test Prep
The first thing you do after choosing a CLEP course to prepare for is to pick an ending date. When do you want to have the course completed by? (Check and see when you’ll be able to take the CLEP or AP exam at your local community college or high school.) Then, you can enter your cell phone number to receive text reminders about your CLEP Test Prep course.
The CLEP Biology: Study Guide & Test Prep course is self-paced and begins with a placement exam so the student can test out of the material they already know. It gives you a personalized study plan! There are 211 available lessons with an average lesson length of 8 minutes each. A certificate for completing the course is available upon completion.
The course description is:
Increase your knowledge of the topics you’ll be tested on when you take the CLEP Biology exam with this study guide course. You can use the short video lessons to review biology topics like organic chemistry, animal behavior and evolution, and then test your understanding using the self-assessment quizzes and chapter tests.
After reading the lessons and watching the videos, there are quizzes to take. And, at the end, there is a final exam. The exciting part is that depending on the college my daughter goes to, this test will count for 3-8 credits, for only $105!

What We Liked About Study.com CLEP Test Prep
The first thing we did was have my daughter take the placement test so she could test out of material she already knows. There were 30 questions. She got 11 out of 30 correct. Since she’s not finished with her biology course yet (she finishes that at the end of May), I thought that was great! I’ll have her do this test prep course at the same time she is working on her biology book, and she’ll be ready for the CLEP exam at the beginning of June!
Each lesson of the CLEP Biology: Study Guide and Test Prep course includes about an 8-minute video. The teacher talking was easy to understand, and she made the lessons interesting. The videos also have slides, with some animation, graphics, charts, definitions, etc. so it’s easy to follow what she’s talking about. You can read and/or print out the transcript of the video lesson as well.
This is an example of what the video transcript looks like:
Each lesson also has a worksheet that can be printed out and concludes with an online quiz. One thing I really liked about the quiz was that if you miss a question, you can click “Watch Correct Answer” and it will take you to the exact spot in the video where the answer can be watched!
Our Assessment:
Of course, the final assessment will occur when my daughter actually takes the CLEP test in June. I’ll be back to let you know how she did. At this point, though, we have confidence that Study.com will get her to where she needs to be to get a passing score!

Thanks for posting this review about the Biology CLEP test, it was really helpful. I was wondering what grade your daughter ended up making and what length of time it took to prepare for the test?
I’m glad you asked! Her co-op ended up doing Advanced Biology (Anatomy and Physiology) last year, so she decided to finish that before taking the Bio CLEP. Now, she is going to practice up for it this summer and hopefully take it before school starts in the fall! I’ll update back here when she gets her score!
