I just finished reading one of the most important books I’ve ever read! It’s called Six Ways to Keep the “Good” in Your Boy: Guiding Your Son from His Tweens to His Teens by Dannah Gresh. I now have 2 boys who are ages 10 and 11, so the timing was perfect for me to read this.

Here are some of the things that Dannah addresses in the book:
- How to Be a Connecting Mom
- The Male Brain on Testosterone
- Get Him Outside to Play
- Why Reading Books is Important
- Celebrating His Entrance into Manhood
- Unplugging Him from a Plugged-In World
- Teaching Him to Be a Gentleman
It’s really written for moms, but Dannah’s husband Bob does chime in quite often. He often says, “Here’s a good paragraph for you to ask your husband/ boy’s dad to read.”
At the end of each chapter, there are questions to answer and decisions about your own personal situation to make. And then there is a great prayer to pray for each of your sons!
I already feel like I need to read the book again–so I can really get it into my mind and into the way I interact with my boys. My husband and I need to discuss and make some decisions together, such as how much screen time to allow.
Here are some of the great quotes from the book:
“A boy’s purpose, I believe, will include being a contributor to society, being intimate with a wife in a lifelong marriage, being a great father, and continuing to grow in the nurture and admonition of the Lord at every stage of the way.”
Deep and Heavy Issues
There are some deep and heavy issues addressed in the book. A Christian mom needs to understand these things so she can guide her son in the right direction:
“A lot of parents are afraid of these kinds of conversations. You should be more afraid of not having them.”
“The tiniest bit of complacency can lead to rebellion that will change the course of their lives.”
I’m also going to read Six Ways to Keep the “Little” in Your Girl by Dannah Gresh, since my oldest girls are now 7 and 8!
