[Today’s post Boost Your Child’s Confidence (and Yours) with a Martial Arts Class … at Home! is a guest post by Jody Token.]
Today, you will learn how to add a martial arts class at home!
Martial Arts Class
When my daughters were in middle school, my husband and I wanted to introduce them to self-defense skills. We diligently researched the best martial art program and enrolled them (and myself) into a Brazilian jiu-jitsu class.
They hated it.
The physical contact was uncomfortable because they were required to grapple with boys in a co-ed environment. The communication style of the instructor lacked emotional intelligence and only focused on the needs of boys. I was a little uncomfortable with some of the secular and spiritual distractions.
Value of Teaching Self-Defense
I understood the value of teaching self-defense skills and at the same time, I wanted their motivation to be rooted in their faith. There was no Christian alternative in my area. So over time, I developed one.
I continued my training for seven years and became a certified Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor. During that time I created an online program that would allow the whole family, age six and up, the ability to learn the basics of a martial art with self-defense, safety and faith as the cornerstone.
The Great Flip
Thus The Great Flip was created. The Great Flip is an online martial arts website featuring self-defense technique videos, easy-to-follow lesson plans and Christian-worldview devotions to give families a physical, emotional and spiritual faith-over-fear experience. My program is fun, playful and empowering. I believe everyone can learn a martial art, even at home.
“Self-defense is a great skill for your children to learn and working a Christian worldview into the lesson plans is what sets Jody’s program apart from others.”
~ a homeschool educator mom, who reviewed The Great Flip.
Physical Education Requirement
And bonus … adding a martial art unit to your homeschool schedule will fulfill your child’s physical education requirements, and it will add to their confidence and courage meter, for a lifetime.
Benefits of Martial Arts Class at Home
A few martial arts physical education unit benefits:
It’s a fun and healthy outlet to release energy
It will improve focus on schoolwork
It will boost your child’s confidence
It will develop strength and flexibility
It will empower your child to overcome a fear of bullies
You control the schedule and expense
It offers a real-life application to self-defense
It’s a fun activity the whole family can enjoy
It puts you in control of the experience
The martial arts have long been known to improve self-esteem, confidence and courage. The Great Flip now brings these attributes plus a Christian worldview right into your home.
Biblical Connections and Role-Play Activities
In every lesson plan, I include a Biblical connection to physical activity. For example, the first form of self-defense taught in Lesson Plan One is the value of “Using your Voice.”
Children learn to use their voices in role-play activities to create boundaries, communicate intentions, and call for help. At the end of the physical activity, I wrap up the lesson by encouraging the children to learn how they can use their voice for good. For example, to speak kindness to one another. I challenge children to look at Bible verses that introduce them to God’s voice/The Word.

Use discount code TGF10 at checkout and enjoy a 10 percent discount on all the plans except the Empowered Plan.
Once you purchase a plan, you may share it with your co-op or homeschool group. I just ask that you keep it within your group to protect your passwords and my hard work.
Additional devotions are featured on my blog and social media. I write devotions for True Girl, a ministry of Dannah Gresh. The Great Flip is an American Heritage Girls national program alliance. And yes, boys can do it too. It’s just that I have daughters and a lot of girls like the program too.
