Online Homeschool Planner Review: Homeschool Planet

Have you ever tried an online homeschool planner? Today, I’m happy to review one called Homeschool Planet. Learn all about it here!

Here are the steps I took to set up and start using Homeschool Planet:

• First, I added the users (me and my kids), with photos, email addresses, and cell phone numbers (for those that have them).
• I set up the dates of the new school year. I clicked “Holidays for the United States” and “Christian Holidays” to get those automatically added in and not counted as school days. It was easy to simply click to change to a green check mark or red X if I didn’t agree with having it as a school holiday or not (such as Columbus Day which will still be a school day for us).
• Next, I chose the subjects for my kids. I added several in such as Phonics, Piano, and Violin.

• I added Subjects such as Christian Youth Theater class and Tapestry of Grace homeschool co-op.
• If you’re keeping grades, you can set up the categories next. The default grade categories are homework, project, quiz, test. I also added performance as a category.

• If you need to track hours for your state (my state doesn’t require it), the next tab lets you set that up.
• The next part of setting up shows you how to “Share” in different ways: connect it to Google Calendar, for example. You can “share in” and “share out.”
• The final thing under the Settings tab allows you to change the Theme. There are 18 different colors/designs to choose from. I like this pretty blue-green color.

There is still A LOT more to Homeschool Planet that I haven’t gotten to yet. It’s very comprehensive.

What I Love about Homeschool Planet Online Homeschool Planner

• There are numerous tutorials available (some are included linked through the Help tab and lots of others can be found on Youtube)
• It emails or texts daily/weekly lessons to me and the students. It’s so customizable. You tell it exactly what you want it to do!
• The optional Widgets available on the sidebar. I love them all! To Do list, Daily Quote, Shopping List, Reading List, Daily Bible Verse, Weather, Lookup (links to a number of websites), and Messages. You can easily send, share, or print any of these.

Homeschool Planet Lesson Plan Marketplace

The Lesson Plan Marketplace is so cool because there are pre-made homeschool lesson plans from different homeschool curriculum providers. With just a click, all the assignments, notes, and links are added to your online planner! Some of the ones currently available are Lifepac, BJU Press, Mark Kistler Drawing, Meet the Masters art, Veritas Press, Rosetta Stone, Family Time Fitness, The Mystery of History, IEW Poetry Memorization, IEW Fix It Grammar, Brave Writer, All About Spelling, Saxon Math, and so many more!

Personally, I tried a free homeschool lesson plan provided by Homeschool Planet called Virtual Field Trips. I scheduled it for once a week on Friday afternoons during the school year. I took a look at a few of them, and I know we will really enjoy them. The twelve virtual field trips include:

• The National Aquarium and the Blacktip Reef Exhibit
• The Capitol of the United States
• Tour of Mark Twain’s Home in Hartford, Connecticut
• 3D Tour of the Solar System
• An Africa Animal Lookout
• Tour of the Frick Collection and Coypel’s Don Quixote Tapestries
• An eHike of Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park
• A quick trip to Ireland
• A Visit Lascaux Cave (France) to see the famous cave paintings
• Tour of the Wreck of the USS Monitor used in the Civil War
• Visit to a Kelp Forest at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
• The Washington Monument in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

What I Don’t Love about Homeschool Planet:

Even though so many things about Homeschool Planet as an online homeschool planner are great, I’m still not comfortable or fast with it. I’m still going to try to make it work because I’m sure it will be helpful if I can get it all figured out.
